« Solarpunk » : le manifeste

Solarpunk is a movement in speculative fiction, art, fashion, and activism that seeks to answer and embody the question "what does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?" The aesthetics of solarpunk merge the practical with the beautiful, the well-designed with the green and lush, the bright and colorful with the earthy and solid. Solarpunk can be utopian, just optimistic, or concerned with the struggles en route to a better world, but never dystopian. At its core, Solarpunk is a vision of a future that embodies the best of what humanity can achieve: a post-scarcity, post-hierarchy, post-capitalistic world where humanity sees itself as part of nature and clean energy replaces fossil fuels.

Le point de départ. Apparu sur les forums au tournant des années 2010, le solarpunk répond à une question simple : à quoi ressemble une civilisation soutenable, et comment y arriver ? Un imaginaire post-pénurie, post-fossile, jamais dystopique — la boussole de tout ce fil d'été.

« Solarpunk : vers des futurs radieux » — la première anthologie francophone

Loin de la science-fiction militariste et des dystopies, le genre solarpunk propose des récits utopistes et écologistes, imagine des futurs meilleurs et propose des axes de réflexion pour penser l'avenir sous l'angle de l'espoir. Une des particularités du solarpunk est qu'il s'agit d'un mouvement autogéré international, qui publie des anthologies un peu partout. Il n'était pas encore paru d'anthologie francophone de solarpunk ; le moment nous a semblé...

Longtemps anglophone, le solarpunk a désormais son anthologie en français (Les Moutons électriques, 2024) : dix-sept textes qui préfèrent l'espoir à la SF militariste. La porte d'entrée idéale pour commencer.

Le solarpunk version douce : un moine du thé et un robot conscient se demandent de quoi les gens ont vraiment besoin. Le « cosy » écologique par excellence, à lire à l'ombre.

L'ancêtre (1974). Une société anarchiste et frugale sur une planète aride : Le Guin y pose, trente ans avant le mot, les fondations politiques du genre.

1975 : trois États de la côte ouest font sécession pour bâtir une société écologique radicale. Le roman-programme qui a nourri des générations d'utopistes verts.

One such path towards the utopian imaginary, Solarpunk is a vision and aesthetic that elevates both human and ecological interconnectedness and reciprocity, quality of life, regenerative kinship, communal, and economic relations, play, creativity, diversity, participation, and a culture of abundance. Solarpunk is a young and evolving concept, with various interpretations. Essentially, it rejects dystopian pessimism and, instead, puts forward regenerative aspirations that challenge us to alter our social habits. Appropedia's Solarpunk page collects further political analysis and offers a selection of work from Solarpunk activists who are, "envisioning a positive future beyond scarcity and hierarchy, in which humanity is reintegrated with nature, and technology is used for human-centric and ecocentric purposes."

Les « cyberdeck girls » : bidouiller son ordi pour fuir les algos

What makes this trend so fascinating is the limitless creativity of the devices. A certain CC, who describes herself as an "open source baddie" and runs the blog Bimbo Tech, popularized the movement with her "P-Sea SeaShell," a cyberdeck housed in a pink seashell, which serves alternately as a Tamagotchi, an e-reader, a Markdown note editor, and a server monitor. Connected to her local AI setup and her VPN mesh, the device allows its creator to do everything without ever relying on major platforms. Creator Annike Tan, aka Ube Boobey on TikTok, designed a "mermaid" cyberdeck with gold accents and pearls tucked under the keyboard. Her video, ironically titled "Cunty cyberdeck," has racked up tens of millions of views. A young software engineer from New York, Brianna, programmed a mini barista game inside a pink Dunkin' box. Others are doing the same with Hello Kitty boxes, rubber ducks, or old plastic makeup containers. The idea is simple: to transform what mainstream culture considers "girly," and therefore frivolous, into a tool of power.

Des créatrices logent des ordinateurs dans des coquillages ou des palettes de maquillage — tamagotchi, liseuse, serveur perso — pour tout faire sans les grandes plateformes. Une audience à 75 % féminine qui transforme le « girly » en outil de pouvoir. La bidouille que tu avais en tête.

Le cyberdeck n'est pas qu'une esthétique : ici c'est un atelier concret où l'on apprend à souder et comprendre son propre hardware — le solarpunk « déjà là », convivial et féminin (#womeninstem).

Calafou : une colonie éco-industrielle post-capitaliste en Catalogne

Calafou is a former "industrial colony" based in Catalonia, 60km west of Barcelona. It is in this place that the "Integral Catalan Cooperative" (CIC) chose to establish a new cooperative of social accommodation in 2011, offering the owner to rent it with a purchasing option in order to give it a new life and develop common goods and a new productive and economic life, with a logic of social and solidarity economy. To this day, about thirty people live there all year round and develop very diverse projects in the 28,000 m2 of the place: micro-brewing, IT development, bio arts, electro-bio-chemical experiments, gynepunk communities, metal and wooden fabrication, energy and technology autonomy, phyto-purification, an organic producer network, food preparation…

Déjà là (2/4). Dans une usine textile abandonnée près de Barcelone, une trentaine de personnes vivent en autogestion depuis 2011 : hacklab, brasserie, souveraineté énergétique et technologique. L'utopie devenue adresse postale.

L'Atelier Paysan : rendre aux paysans la maîtrise de leurs outils

À l'Atelier Paysan, nous partons du principe que les paysan·nes sont assez bien placé·es pour répondre de manière pertinente aux défis du développement agricole : les agriculteur·trices innovent par eux-mêmes sur leurs fermes. Mieux ! En groupe, en réseau ou avec l'appui d'un animateur technique, ils et elles savent élaborer collectivement des réponses adaptées. Nous portons l'idée que les choix techniques doivent être faits avec, par et pour les agriculteur·rices, et plus globalement, que la technique doit être investie collectivement pour se mettre au service de celles et ceux qui l'utilisent. Cette prise paysanne sur les choix techniques peut alors être un vecteur de l'autonomie paysanne.

Déjà là (3/4), et en France. Une coopérative qui conçoit avec les agriculteur·rices des machines low-tech, plans publiés en Creative Commons. La « souveraineté technique » comme geste politique concret.

Precious Plastic : recycler le plastique en open source, partout

It all started in 2014 when Dave Hakkens, then a student at the Eindhoven Design Academy, released his design for a plastic recycling machine to the world for free. The aim was to make plastic recycling available to local communities at scale by lowering the technological threshold for success with easily replicable and repairable machines. That year, three people independently replicated Hakkens' machine. Within a short time, the Precious Plastic project was born. Everything the project makes - from machines, tutorials and tools to product designs - is shared freely online under open-source licenses, enabling anyone, anywhere, to start a plastic recycling project. Machines can also be purchased and shipped globally, or, for the DIY-savvy, replicated, repaired and improved upon with off-the-shelf materials.
